Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a thin coat of clear resin that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth, usually the rear molars. The back teeth are more prone to cavities because is difficult to reach them with a tooth brush and the surfaces contain pits and grooves that easily trap bacteria. It is hard for many adults to clean their back molars and almost impossible for our young Sparks NV area children.

Dental sealants fill in the pits and grooves on the rear molars to create a smooth surface. Sparks NV family dentistry practices most often recommend sealants for children’s permanent back teeth, though sometimes they are used for adults, too.

Parents may not realize how quickly a cavity can form in a young child’s mouth. Many Sparks NV area kids that we see develop cavities even before they start kindergarten! Energy Drink Warning For Sparks NV

Hello. I’m Dr. Shane Sykes.

Welcome to my Sparks NV dental blog. Today’s topic is energy drinks and the damage they can cause to your teeth. I am seeing more and more Reno area teens and adults with tooth enamel erosion caused by frequent consumption of sport drinks.

Most of these general dentistry patients take good care of their teeth, brush and flush, and come into The Reno Dentist for a twice-yearly exam and deep cleaning. But guess what? If you drink energy drinks regularly, your enamel can erode even if you practice immaculate oral hygiene.

Energy drinks like Red Bull, Rock Star, and Monster are a cocktail of powerful acids and other enamel-eroding substances. Most of them contain citric acid, fruit juices, loads of sugar, and a potent chemical that gives them their bright fluorescent color.

Perhaps, like myself, you have often noticed young people walking out of Sparks NV convenience stores swigging 32-ounce energy drinks. I am concerned that Reno area teens do not understand the serious dental consequences of frequent acid baths.

The following is from ABC Sports:

“Sports drinks are increasingly damaging the teeth of professional and recreational athletes, one of Australia’s top sports dentists has warned. Dr. Brett Dorney says he has witnessed a huge increase in dental erosion since the Sidney Olympics, when he was the event’s deputy director of dental services.”

Here is an excerpt from a recent CNN Story:

“Researchers at the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry found the energy drinks and sports drinks eroded the enamel more than soda and fruit juices.”

I need to add the caveat that soda and fruit juices also contain acids that can damage teeth.

I’m sure you brush and floss regularly and hopefully visit your Reno cosmetic dental practice for cleanings, but did you know that making small changes to your diet can improve your oral health?

Most Reno residents are aware that sugar found in candy, cookies, and sodas can harm your teeth, but some people don’t realize that all carbohydrates can cause cavities. A handful of pretzels or a piece of pumpernickel bread can have the same effect on your teeth as a fudge brownie.

All carbohydrates break down into simple sugars, which are converted into plaque, which can then cause cavities and gum disease. Carbs are naturally sticky and adhere to your teeth. Eating carbs with meals is healthier than eating them as snacks because more saliva is generated at mealtime. Saliva helps prevent food particles from sticking to teeth.

My name is Dr. Shane Sykes, DMD. I have been practicing cosmetic and general dentistry in the Sparks NV area since 2011.
