family dentist Reno

Looking for a dentist in Reno, Nevada 89503 because you’re losing the battle with buildup, chipped teeth, tooth pain, stains or decay? I’m Dr. Shane Sykes with The Reno Dentist since 2011. This article offers 3 steps to take before you arrive at our office for a consultation.

The state of your mouth is vital to your strength both emotionally and physically. Everyone wants to make a positive impression when they smile or speak. We understand that. The look, the odor, the feel, the functionality of your biting surfaces are so important to your everyday experience that we recognize our vital role in finding solutions to these troubles.

Of course, your very first step is making contact. Please call 775-322-5016 or visit us at 855 W Seventh St Ste 200 Reno, Nevada 89503 or online at https://www.therenodentist.com/about/our-doctors/.

After you schedule a consultation with our knowledgeable team members here at The Reno Dentist please take a moment to review the following checklist for a productive appointment experience:
1. Understand your hygiene routine and gaps in technique or consistency.
When do you brush your teeth? Do you floss? How often? If not, why? We can review your habits and determine what is holding you back, if anything.
2. Identify pain or problem areas throughout your mouth.
Persistent or intermittent? Sharp or dull? Triggered by hot or cold? Living with pain is unnecessary with the technology and expertise available these days. Sometimes there are uncomplicated solutions to seemingly big pains. Let us address all your aches.
3. What do you want  your smile to look like?
If you can describe your ideal smile, we can discuss how to achieve it. There are numerous possibilities for a fantastic smile transformation as well as dental maintenance procedures. Cosmetic dentistry runs the gamut from teeth whitening to veneers to dental implants.

We anticipate you’ll have questions about the cost of porcelain veneers, cost and time commitment for dental implants, possibility of invisible braces, the price of filling a cavity or placing a crown. We will have answers for you. We are equipped and trained in procedures perfect for your concerns and needs. We see patients for dentures, Invisalign, root canals, porcelain veneers, or wisdom teeth extraction. We assist patients in reaching their dental goals through cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, restorative dentistry, and many other affordable procedures.

Why You Shouldn’t Dread Going To The Dentist

Spanish Springs gentle dentist

If you are afraid of the dentist and have not had a check-up in years, today’s post is for you. Good news! Dentistry in the Reno area and around Nevada is nothing like it was when you were a kid. (Even if you’re still a kid, we invite you to keep reading.)

There Is No Reason to Avoid Dental Visits
First off, if you need dental treatment, oral sedation dentistry allows you to sleep during the procedure. There are several levels of sedation – you can remain conscious or take a trip to la-la land. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Shane Sykes for more critical information about sleep dentistry.

If you have a bad memory of hurting for days after a procedure, relax. Improved painkillers, lasers, and advanced techniques have reduced the pain experienced by The Reno Dentist patients. If you need extensive treatment, we will create a pain management plan to ensure that you remain comfortable.

You Won’t Be Here All Day
Dr. Sykes can perform procedures much quicker with today’s extremely precise dental instruments. Healing times for oral surgery are also much shorter.

You don’t have to live with gaps in your smile, sore gums, stained teeth, or a toothache. We can take care of all your dental issues. We will help restore your oral health to improve your quality of life and prevent dental troubles from affecting other parts of your body.

Today’s Reno dentistry is not your father’s dentistry. We invite you to discover why you shouldn’t avoid the dentist any longer.

We look forward to meeting you. Call The Reno Dentist today at 775-322-5016.

Debunking Dental Myths

Carson City cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Today’s The Reno Dentist blog post focuses on three dental-related myths prevalent in the Sparks area.

All Sugar Is Equally Bad For Teeth
We all know that sugar increases our risk of tooth decay, but some types are worse than others. Sugar-based foods that sit on the teeth are more dangerous than those that are swallowed immediately. For example, sipping a soda or sucking on a mint can be worse than eating a candy bar all at once.

You Don’t Need To Worry About Baby Teeth Because They Will Fall Out Anyway
Healthy primary teeth serve several important purposes. They allow the child to eat and speak properly. They retain proper spacing of teeth. A healthy smile instills confidence and self-esteem. Healthy baby teeth eliminate the pain of decay which disrupts normal daily activity.

Pulling A Tooth Is Just As Good As A Root Canal
We will let the American Associate of Endodontists explain this one:
Saving your natural teeth, if possible, is the very best option. Nothing can completely replace your natural tooth. An artificial tooth can sometimes cause you to avoid certain foods. Keeping your own teeth is important so that you can continue to enjoy the wide variety of foods necessary to maintain the proper nutrient balance in your diet. Endodontic treatment, along with appropriate restoration, is a cost-effective way to treat teeth with damaged pulp and is usually less expensive than extraction and placement of a bridge or an implant. Endodontic treatment also has a very high success rate. Many root canal-treated teeth last a lifetime.1

At The Reno Dentist, we provide accurate answers to all of your dental questions.

If you are interested in root canals, porcelain veneers or Invisalign, call us today to schedule an appointment.

The The Reno Dentist Guide To Dental X-Rays

The The Reno Dentist Guide To Dental X-Rays

Don’t know a periapical from a bitewing? Today’s Reno dental blog takes a look at dental x-rays.

Panoramic
If you have ever stood in a huge camera apparatus and struggled to stay motionless while an automated camera made one slow pass around your head, then you have had a panoramic x-ray taken of your mouth. These pictures help dentists see everything in one image: the complete upper and lower jaw. These are often taken during a patient’s first visit to The Reno Dentist. They are also very helpful for evaluating jaw injuries and seeing emerging teeth in children.

Bitewing
Bitewing x-rays help Dr. Sykes see what’s going on between teeth – something that is always needed but impossible with a visual exam. They also help your dentist evaluate the jaw bone.

Periapical
These are similar to bite wings but they can get a clearer picture of the tooth roots and bone. These are typically used to help diagnose an abscess in the root of a tooth.

Full-Mouth Series
This is a combination of periapical and bitewing x-rays that gives a comprehensive picture of all the teeth and surrounding bone structure.

If you are a patient of The Reno Dentist and are worried about the safety of dental x-rays, we invite you to
speak with our knowledgeable staff. We can explain all the precautions that we take to reduce radiation exposure and answer any questions you may have.

If you are pregnant and need a dental x-ray at The Reno Dentist, it is critical to let Shane Sykes know this before x-rays are taken. X-rays are not necessarily dangerous for pregnant women, but they are often postponed until after delivery as a precaution. If you are pregnant but have a dental issue, call our office right away. We can be reached at 775-322-5016.

We hope you have learned a little bit about dental x-rays, one of Shane Sykes’s indispensable tools in providing unsurpassed dental care in Reno. Check back often for more specifics about dentistry at The Reno Dentist.

6 Easy Ways To Eat Like A Dentist In Reno

6 Easy Ways To Eat Like A Dentist In Reno

There is nothing that influences your smile as much as your eating habits in Reno, Nevada. Develop good eating habits and your Sparks dentist will smile down on you too. Dental patients would do well to follow the example of a dentist in what and how they eat.

1. Rinse after eating
Rinse your mouth with a drink of water or brush your teeth after a meal. Reno folks who snack all day long prolong tooth exposure to sugars and food debris. Planned meals with brushing in between keeps your oral health on top.

2. Avoid sugary gum

Sugar free gum doesn’t leave sugar to break down on your teeth and spoil your hard earned healthy gums. If you are one of the many Sparks gum chewers, do your teeth a favor and go sugarless.

3. Avoid sticky foods
Sticky foods have a habit of clinging to your teeth with stronger chances for decay. Toffee, gummy candy, fruit snacks, even dried fruit can be problematic for Reno smiles. Brushing doesn’t always remove the obstinate particles.

4. Consume nutritious foods
A balanced diet with a variety of vitamins and minerals can keep the immune system and able to fight infection.

5. Consume cheese
Cheese contains calcium and protects from acid that breaks down tooth enamel. (It’s critical not to go overboard as cheese is high in fat.)

6. Avoid acidic foods
Acid will eat away enamel over time: lemons, red wine, soda pop. Minimize direct, constant, consistent exposure. All things in moderation.

If you have concerns about enamel damage that’s already taken place on your teeth, need help with crooked, chipped or missing teeth, or just need to get in for a check up, call The Reno Dentist in Reno today.

We’ll answer your questions about root canals, wisdom teeth extraction, and dentures. We know braces, veneers, dental implants, oral sedation, and the cost of cosmetic dentistry in Reno can bring up questions and concerns. Dr. Shane Sykes minimizes those worries and brings you to a place of knowledge and power. Make an appointment to discuss your dental goals.

Preventative Maintenance For Your Irreplaceable Smile In Reno

General Dentistry Preventative Maintenance For Your Smile In Reno

Hi, I’m Shane Sykes of The Reno Dentist. If you are one of my existing patients, welcome back. If this is your first visit, I appreciate you stopping by.

My knowledgeable team and I love taking care of our Reno, Spanish Springs, Virginia City, and Carson City patients.

Today’s article is for Sparks area people who are overdue for a cleaning and exam.

During dental deep cleanings, our hygienists thoroughly remove the plaque and tartar above and below the gumline. By scaling and planing, they remove areas where bacteria can easily multiply. If you are due for a cleaning, call us today at 775-322-5016
to schedule.

After your teeth have been cleaned, I perform a thorough examination. I check for overall tooth and gum health, the presence of cavities, gum pocket depth, bite issues, and signs of oral cancer.

Some Reno people mistakenly believe that they can skip general dentistry visits if they don’t notice anything out of the ordinary. This attitude is risky. Many dental problems advance silently. When the patient experiences pain, much damage has been done. Gum disease, especially, often progresses unnoticed.

If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about dental financing options. It costs far less to prevent problems than to treat them after they have become severe.

If you perform regular auto maintenance, you understand the wisdom of prevention. Don’t you value your smile far more than your car? Call The Reno Dentist today to schedule preventative maintenance for your irreplaceable smile.

4 Super Tips For Strong Enamel In Spanish Springs

Spanish Springs General Dentistry and Dental Health

Did you know that enamel is the hardest substance in the body? It’s true! This substance, found on the outer surface of your teeth, truly should last a lifetime. But just because it’s super strong doesn’t mean you don’t have to work to take care of it.

Here are some helpful tips for keeping enamel healthy.

1. Pick the right foods for enamel health. It’s no secret that soft drinks hurt your teeth, and don’t think that diet sodas are harmless – the artificial sweeteners can also erode enamel over time. There are also other culinary culprits that can do a lot of harm. Sticky, chewy candies should be avoided. Chewing ice is a no-no. And don’t use your teeth as tools. Take a minute to grab some scissors before you rip open that package with your teeth.

On the flip side, foods with calcium can neutralize acid in your mouth as protect your teeth. So, enjoy your dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurt!

2. Avoid vigorous brushing and use a soft brush. Also, it’s best to brush about an hour after eating, because foods, especially acidic ones, can soften the enamel, thus making it more prone to damage from brushing. If your teeth are discolored or yellowish, you may feel you need to brush harder. Instead, discuss teeth whitening with your dentist.

3. Keep stomach acids in check. If you have a problem with severe heartburn, the stomach acid could be traveling up your esophagus and into your mouth. This acid can erode enamel, so talk to your Spanish Springs, Reno, or Carson City doctor about treatment.

4. Talk to your dentist about dry mouth and tooth grinding. Lack of saliva is a major problem for tooth enamel, and it’s no surprise that teeth grinding can also wear it down. Make sure your Sparks area dentist is aware if you experience either of these issues.

Hi, my name is Dr. Shane Sykes. I want my patients to have the best oral health possible, and that starts with enamel health. I also love helping my patients get the dazzling smile they want with various cosmetic dentistry procedures such as dental bonding, veneers, invisible braces, tooth colored fillings, and dental implants.

My practice, The Reno Dentist, is currently accepting new patients, so give us a call at 775-322-5016 to make an appointment!

Keeping Dental Patients Comfortable in Reno

Keeping Cosmetic Dental Patients Comfortable in Reno

Pain isn’t fun. Your Reno dentist knows this, and that is why the dental team at The Reno Dentist have made patient comfort a top priority. In conjunction with creating a relaxing environment, your dentist has various medications that can reduce and even eliminate pain associated with different dental procedures to give you a more enjoyable experience.

Some of the most common pain-relieving medications used in Sparks dentist offices and around the country are topical anesthetics. These are swabbed directly onto mouth tissue so they only numb the very surface layers. Topical anesthetics can reduce the pain of mouth sores, or they can be applied to prepare the mouth for an injection.

Local anesthetics are injected into mouth tissue (usually the gums) to block the nerve sensations to specific areas of the mouth. Spanish Springs, Virginia City, and Carson City dentists numb the mouth in this way before filling cavities, treating gum disease, or before certain cosmetic dentistry procedures.

It is very common for your dentist to recommend an over the counter analgesic to relieve pain after a dental visit. These medications include aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen.

Because your Reno cosmetic dentist will most likely use a pain reliever during the dental visit or prescribe something for you to take after the treatment, make sure you jot down a complete list of medications you are taking, including herbal supplements, before each appointment.

I’m Dr. Shane Sykes and I want Sparks residents to be informed about their dental care, especially as it pertains to pain relief during dental treatment. If you are in the Reno area and are looking for quality dental care, please contact my office today at (775) 525-5692. Our knowledgeable staff would be happy to talk to you about cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, wisdom teeth extraction, and the other services we offer.

Healthy Baby Teeth For Sparks Toddlers

Sparks NV Family Dentistry For Healthy Toddler Teeth

Though we don’t often think about it, Sparks children as young as 9 or 10 months of age can be infected with cavity producing bacteria, which causes cavities and tooth decay. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that almost 20% of children 2-5 have untreated cavities, and the percentage rises in children over 6. 1

Tooth decay, if left undetected or untreated in Sparks toddlers and children can result in altered eating habits, delayed speech development, and create an unhealthy environment for permanent tooth development. Healthy baby teeth lead to healthier permanent teeth later in life.

Spanish Springs mothers who practice preventive dental and oral care during prenatal and postnatal periods can better protect her child from cavities. Sparks parents and care providers should not prop a bottle for their baby in a crib or car seat, avoiding nighttime bottle or breast feeding, and clean their child’s teeth with a cloth or soft baby toothbrush as soon as they erupt. It is also recommended that Sparks parents check regularly for chalky white or brown spots which could indicate the beginning of decay.2

Reno family dentists in the 89503 zip code area advise taking your child to his first dental appointment six months after the first tooth appears, or around his first birthday to begin discussing fluoride prescriptions and other preventive care issues.

To set up your toddler’s first dental check-up at The Reno Dentist in Reno call 775-322-5016 today! Our knowledgeable staff will be happy to answer all of your questions. We also provide cosmetic and general dentistry for all members of the family.
