Quite simply, a dental veneer is a thin layer of material that we secure over a tooth’s surface. This is done either to protect a damaged surface or to improve the appearance of chipped, crooked or uneven teeth. Reasons that may once have prevented you from smiling are no longer an embarrassment with porcelain veneers or dental veneers. Both porcelain veneers and dental veneers are a testament to how much dentistry has evolved over the years, especially from the days where a dental crown was the only option of hiding an imperfection.

So what’s the difference between porcelain veneers and dental veneers? A porcelain veneer is a type of dental veneer that is made of porcelain. A porcelain dental veneer has many desirable qualities. A dental veneer made of porcelain is a permanent solution, has translucent qualities that make it look like a natural tooth, is strong and durable, and is created in a laboratory and then bonded to the tooth. As it is created in the lab rather than your mouth, it is a quicker, cleaner and easier process for you. A dental veneer, by comparison, can be made of other materials and need not be permanent. They can simply be molded over the teeth and can be taken out at a moment’s notice – they can even be reused as they are made from a flexible resin.
