Eruption Charts: Not As Scary As They Sound

teeth whitening Reno

Hello Sparks! Thanks for visiting the Reno dental blog. Today we’re talking about eruption charts and what they are used for.

First, an eruption chart is simply a listing of the different types of teeth in the mouth and when, on average, they come out, or ‘erupt’, from the gums. A primary teeth eruption chart will also tell you when to expect the different teeth to be lost.

Dentists in the Spanish Springs, Virginia City, and Carson City area use these charts to compare the development of their patients’ teeth to the average times in the population.

Hi. I’m Dr. Shane Sykes, an experienced Reno family and cosmetic dentist. The friendly staff here at The Reno Dentist would love to schedule an appointment with you and answer any questions you have about eruption times, children’s braces, dental sealants, athletic mouthguards as well as questions about teeth whitening and Spanish Springs dental implants.

The Reno Dentist is a full-service dental office. Some of the services we offer are:

root canals
wisdom teeth extraction
dentures
porcelain veneers
Invisalign

Give us a call today at 775-323-0700 and we can discuss these services as well as smile makeovers.

Wear A Crown In Sparks

Wear A Crown In Sparks

Some Reno residents who have a weak or broken tooth may want to research dental crowns as a solution to improve their smile and overall oral health. A crown is really a cap or covering that is tooth-shaped and when it is in place, it will cover the portion of the covered tooth that is above the gum line.

Crowns can be made of metals, resin, ceramic, porcelain, or a porcelain-fused-to-metal material. Your Reno area dentist will usually put in a temporary crown while a permanent crown is being created especially for your mouth in a dental laboratory.

Dental crowns have been used successfully in Reno cosmetic dentistry for decades.

Many Spanish Springs, Virginia City, and Carson City dentists use crowns when performing smile makeovers to cover patient’s discolored or poorly shaped teeth. Strong, natural-looking crowns are also used with dental implants.

If you think a dental crown may be right for you, check with your Sparks dentist. Or, if you are searching for quality dental care in the Sparks area, call us here at The Reno Dentist. We are located in Reno and have been serving the greater Reno area since 2011. We are currently accepting new patients at our state-of-the art, yet warm and comfortable dental office.

Call us at 775-323-0700 and our knowledgeable staff can answer any questions you have about teeth whitening in Reno, veneers, enamel shaping, or any other cosmetic dental, general oral health, or dental financing questions.

Why You Shouldn’t Dread Going To The Dentist

Spanish Springs gentle dentist

If you are afraid of the dentist and have not had a check-up in years, today’s post is for you. Good news! Dentistry in the Reno area and around Nevada is nothing like it was when you were a kid. (Even if you’re still a kid, we invite you to keep reading.)

There Is No Reason to Avoid Dental Visits
First off, if you need dental treatment, oral sedation dentistry allows you to sleep during the procedure. There are several levels of sedation – you can remain conscious or take a trip to la-la land. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Shane Sykes for more critical information about sleep dentistry.

If you have a bad memory of hurting for days after a procedure, relax. Improved painkillers, lasers, and advanced techniques have reduced the pain experienced by The Reno Dentist patients. If you need extensive treatment, we will create a pain management plan to ensure that you remain comfortable.

You Won’t Be Here All Day
Dr. Sykes can perform procedures much quicker with today’s extremely precise dental instruments. Healing times for oral surgery are also much shorter.

You don’t have to live with gaps in your smile, sore gums, stained teeth, or a toothache. We can take care of all your dental issues. We will help restore your oral health to improve your quality of life and prevent dental troubles from affecting other parts of your body.

Today’s Reno dentistry is not your father’s dentistry. We invite you to discover why you shouldn’t avoid the dentist any longer.

We look forward to meeting you. Call The Reno Dentist today at 775-323-0700.

Can I Objectively Evaluate My Smile?

esthetic smile design Spanish Springs

It is no secret that a beautiful, pleasing, healthy smile can be your most esteemed physical attribute. After all, people notice your smile first thing. How do you know if your smile is detracting from your appearance?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; if you look at your smile in the mirror and believe it is unattractive, it doesn’t really matter what anybody else thinks. But what if you are not sure?

There are many issues that are generally considered to detract from unforgettable smiles. Missing teeth is a biggie. People who are missing teeth in the back of the mouth may mistakenly believe that the gap doesn’t show. They are usually wrong. When smiling, talking, laughing, or eating, a missing tooth definitely shows – even if the missing tooth is the very last molar.

Yellow or gray teeth diminish the appeal of a smile – even one that is perfectly healthy and aligned – and crooked teeth are ordinarily considered unattractive.

There are a few unique smile characteristics that some people proudly show off and others wish to change. For instance, a gap between the two front teeth can become your trademark. True Blood star Anna Paquin, actor Woody Harrelson, and singer Seal have retained their spaces. Perhaps the most famous gap-toothed smile belongs to seventy year-old model Lauren Hutton who has proudly flashed it throughout her fifty-year career. Other celebrities such as Zac Efron, Tom Cruise, and Keith Urban weren’t happy with gaps so they transformed their smiles with revolutionary cosmetic dentistry.

If you want an objective aesthetic evaluation of your smile, how can you do this? You can’t see your smile from every angle when you look in the mirror. If you want an expert opinion on the attractiveness of your smile, talk to a cosmetic dentist. There are a surprising number of design principals that are used in smile makeovers. These include size, shape, alignment, proportion, color, and translucency. Moreover, cosmetic dentists also consider the characteristics of the gums, lips, and facial features.

When you have a cosmetic dental consultation, you will be able to see how the vital elements work together to create a natural-looking, memorable smile. Bottom line? If you want to change your smile, you can! Schedule a consultation today by calling 775-323-0700.

Treatment For Stress-Induced Jaw Pain In Reno

Treatment For Stress Induced Jaw Pain In Reno

Everyday problems cause some Reno people to respond by clenching their jaw or grinding their teeth. For example, daily commuting in Sparks can take a physical toll. All the traffic, noise, and perpetual road construction causes some people to grind their teeth as they navigate the sea of cars on packed interstates.

Some Reno residents who hate waiting in long lines channel their frustration to their jaw as they try, by the sheer force of will, to cause the line to move faster.

Teeth grinding and jaw clenching can cause a painful condition called TMD or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. In Reno, TMD is often mistakenly called ‘TMJ’: the acronym for Temporomandibular Joint.

Your jaw is able to open and close thanks to many jaw muscles and the intricate temporomandibular joints. These joints allow for fluid mobility as you chew, speak, and yawn.

Damage to these essential joints can lead to acute pain in the jaw, head, face and neck. Pain may be experienced on one or both sides of the jaw.

TMD is an often misdiagnosed condition in Reno because facial pain can result from a variety of troubles, not just damage to the temporomandibular joints. Sinus infections, tooth decay, and facial inuries can cause jaw pain. A correct diagnosis is the first step in treating TMD.

At The Reno Dentist we have been diagnosing and treating TMD since 2011, working with other specialists when required. If you are experiencing clicking, popping, or discomfort in your jaw, call The Reno Dentist today for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

I am Shane Sykes and I am devoted to providing high quality dentistry to the residents of Reno, Sparks, and Virginia City.

The Reno Dentist not only treats TMD, but we redesign smiles with revolutionary cosmetic dental smile makeovers. In addition, we offer cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, and dentures.

Your smile is contagious! Make sure it is healthy and beautiful. Call The Reno Dentist today at 775-323-0700 to schedule a consultation or examination.

Dental Implants In Sparks

Cosmetic Dentistry The best permanent tooth replacement treatment available to Reno people who are missing teeth are industry-leading dental implants.

A dental implant is a metal (usually titanium) rod implanted into the bone to replace the missing root. The crown and supporting structure are securely and permanently attached to the rod. Titanium is amazingly strong and extremely well tolerated by the human body. There are very few instances of rejection. In fact, many Sparks implant dentists are not familiar with any such cases.

Tooth implants offer a long-term solution to tooth loss. Are you a good candidate for tooth implant surgery?

Because the metal rod is anchored into the jaw bone, it is essential that you have enough healthy bone at the implant site. Dr. Shane Sykes can determine if you do. Age is rarely a factor. Dental implants have proved to be successful for Virginia City people of all ages.

There are a few medical issues that may affect your eligibility for implants. These include diabetes, osteoporosis, radiation therapy for cancer, parathyroid disorders, bone disorders and leukemia. The presence of one or more of these conditions does not necessarily mean an implant cannot work for you; discuss any health issues with Shane Sykes during your implant consultation.

The Reno Dentist is located at 855 W Seventh St Ste 200 in Reno. Call 775-323-0700 to schedule an implant consultation.

Oh No!

Last weekend I took my family and some friends rafting on the South Fork of the American River. The weather was perfect and we stopped on a sandbar to enjoy our lunch and take in the beauty of the river. After quickly eating a juicy watermelon the children set to work digging a complex trench system to “redirect the river.” I was watching their industrious and ambitious undertaking when I heard a sudden cry of anguish, “Oh no!” A younger sibling had

stepped a little too close and the soft, wet sand collapsed and filled in their trench. There was a brief moment of frustration and then I overheard one of them say “Hey, look at this guys!” as they explored new possibilities uncovered by the “disaster” moments before.  Their few moments of distress were forgotten and they smoothly changed course to a new project. This time they were going to dam the river!

How much we can learn from the example of these resilient children. Robert Collier stated “In every adversity there lies the seed of an equivalent advantage. In every defeat is a lesson showing you how to win the victory next time.”
