Celebrating The Past And Looking To The Future At The Reno Dentist

General Dentistry Reno

It has now been 150 years since the first dental license was issued to Sir John Tomes. Reno dental patients should be grateful for the advances made in dentistry during the past 150 years.

There was a time when blacksmiths and wig makers would also extract teeth with forceps to make a little extra money. Anyone could call themselves a dentist. Often these untrained people broke the jaws of the person they were trying to help. Ouch!

At The Reno Dentist, we celebrate with the Reno dental community and marvel at the many advances made in the history of dentistry, particularly cosmetic dentistry.

One of the modern treatments that has helped countless Reno patients is invisible braces. This non-visible orthodontic therapy is custom made for each patient. They are transparent and removable and will help you achieve your desired smile in about 3 to 18 months.

I am Dr. Shane Sykes. My training didn’t end when I graduated from dental school and opened my practice in Reno. As a cutting-edge cosmetic dentist, I continually seek training so I can expertly perform the latest procedures. In addition, our practice uses the most advanced dental materials available.

If you are one of the many Reno residents who has dreamed of an esthetic improvement to your smile, we invite you to make an appointment with The Reno Dentist to discuss a smile makeover. Complete smile transformations are completed as quickly and professionally as possible – sometimes in just one visit!

One of our most sought after treatments at The Reno Dentist is cosmetic dentistry and many Reno folks are enjoying a brighter smile because of dental implants.

At The Reno Dentist we have been serving the residents of  zip code area 89503 since 2011 and would love to provide you and your family with professional family dentistry.

The Reno Dentist in Reno

Family Dentistry Reno Hello! I’m Dr. Shane Sykes, DMD, of The Reno Dentist in Reno.

I have been practicing general and cosmetic dentistry since 2011. Dentistry is a challenging and fascinating profession; dentists must have diagnostic skills, dexterity, extensive scientific knowledge, and good visual memory. Dentistry also requires artistic ability. In addition to the technical aspects of dentistry, I really enjoy interacting with my Reno family dentistry patients.

I recognize that my clients have other choices in Reno area dental practices, and I work continually to earn their trust and surpass their expectations.

Each Reno dentistry client is unique. Many of my patients come in twice-yearly for an exam and cleaning. We help them maintain excellent oral health. Some Reno cosmetic dentistry clients come to me seeking major restorative dentistry procedures. It is extremely gratifying to complete a smile makeover and see the client’s reaction when they see the result for the first time.

When I have a pre-treatment consultation with a new Reno dentistry client, it is very informative for both of us. The patient learns the specifics about the possible procedures and I learn about the clients’ goals, concerns and expectations. Then I work with the client to develop a dental treatment plan that fits the patient’s needs, desired outcome and budget.

My dental practice is located at 855 W Seventh St Ste 200 in Reno. If you are looking for an experienced dentist in the Reno area, call 775-323-0700 to schedule a consultation.

I look forward to meeting with you.

Cavity Fighting Chewing Gum For Our Reno Patients?

General Dentistry Reno I’m Dr. Shane Sykes DMD of The Reno Dentist. My Reno dentistry clients often ask me if chewing xylitol gum is an effective substitute for tooth brushing and regular general dentistry exams.

Before I answer that question, let me tell you a little bit about xylitol:

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that was first discovered in birch tree bark but is also found in many fruits and vegetables. Unlike most other sweeteners (natural or synthetic), xylitol is actually good for your teeth. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that xylitol prevents the growth of the bacteria that initiates decay. It also reduces plaque and strengthens tooth enamel.

Xylitol has other benefits, as well. Because it is low on the glycemic index, many of my Reno diabetic patients enjoy it as a healthy alternative to sugar. If my cosmetic dentistry patients complain about frequent dry mouth, I recommend Xylitol gum or mints to stimulate saliva production without promoting tooth decay.

Now, back to the golden question. Is xylitol gum just as effective as brushing your teeth and seeing your Reno family dentist regularly? Absolutely not! If you cannot brush your teeth after a meal, chewing xylitol gum for five or ten minutes is probably a good idea. However, you should still brush your teeth thoroughly (with a soft brush) after meals and get twice-yearly exams and oral dentistry deep cleanings at your Reno cosmetic dentistry clinic.

At The Reno Dentist, our goal is to keep your smile healthy and beautiful for life by preventing dental problems before they start. If you postpone dental visits until you feel pain, you risk losing teeth and most certainly will require more extensive treatment than if the problem was caught earlier. Is it time for a dental exam? Call us at 775-323-0700 to book an appointment. Our knowledgeable is waiting to take care of all your dental needs.

What is “Better”?

As Scoutmaster I had the opportunity to spend the past week at Boy Scout Camp. I was teaching the scouts about tents and I had them erect two different tents, one a very expensive mountaineering tent and the other a simple low-cost tent from a local department store.

We then compared the differences between the two tents: One was made of heavy fabric, one of light. One had several stout aluminum poles, the other had two thin fiberglass poles. The mountaineering tent had a strong fly that came all the way to the ground, and the simple tent had a small cap to cover the mesh at the top.

After pointing out the numerous differences in the tent and discussing the qualities needed in a good winter tent, I asked the boys “Which of these tents is better?” They excitedly pointed to the bright orange mountaineering tent.

They were very surprised then, when I said “No, this one is not better.” I then proceeded to point out it’s weaknesses: It was heavy, bulky, cumbersome to erect, and very stuffy in warm weather; while the other tent was light, simple, and compact. Then I asked the boys “Which of these tents is better for winter camping?”. Suddenly understanding dawned in their eyes, and once again they excitedly pointed to the stout orange shelter. Then I asked “Which of these tents is better for a short summer backpacking trip in fair weather?” and they pointed to the cheaper tent, cheering “That one!”, still a bit surprised that they decided a cheaper tent could be “better” than an expensive one. Clearly, what is better or best depends on our goals and needs.

Dentistry has changed a lot over the past forty years, and no longer are you guaranteed to have dentures by age fifty. Today we can rebuild smiles and replace missing teeth better than ever before. Yet while there are a great number of treatment options available today available at every price point imaginable, no one treatment is “better” than any other. One choice might be “better” for me, and another one “better” for you, depending on our individual health, goals, and resources. At The Reno Dentist, our job is to help you clarify what you value in your health and your smile, and then determine which of the myriad of options is “better” for you.

We want to make sure that your time with us helps you become the “best” version of you!

Smokeless Is Not Harmless For Sparks NV Tobacco Chewers

General Dentistry Sparks NVHello Sparks NV family dentistry friends. Today’s topic is ‘The Dangers Of Smokeless Tobacco’.

Cigarette sales at most Sparks NV stores have decreased in the past decade, but some tobacco consumers have switched to smokeless products.

There is a common misconception in the Sparks area (especially among teens) that smokeless tobacco is harmless. This is absolutely not true. Regardless of the specific type: spit tobacco, snuff, chew, or pinch, this form of tobacco is as deadly as conventional cigarettes.

At The Reno Dentist, we encounter serious consequences of smokeless tobacco use because many occur in the mouth. Oral cancer, mouth lesions, gum disease and tooth decay are the most common dental problems caused by smokeless tobacco.

Keeping a pinch between your cheek and gum all day is worse than keeping an all-day sucker. The tobacco contains almost as much sugar as the candy but delivers harmful chemicals as an added bonus. The dangers are two-fold: the tobacco erodes the teeth and also causes the gums to pull away from teeth.

Precancerous Mouth Lesion Screening: Mouth Lesions are painful sores that could eventually become cancer. If smokeless tobacco use is stopped, the lesions often disappear within a year for Sparks NV cosmetic dental patients.

Oral Cancer in Sparks NV: Smokeless tobacco use in Sparks increases the risk for several types of life-threatening cancers including those of the mouth, gums, lips, tongue, and throat.

Oral cancers can be as deadly as lung cancer and usually require surgery. If the Sparks NV general dentistry patient is fortunate and the cancer is successfully removed with surgery, the collateral damage to the face, neck, or jaw is not pretty.

These are the main dental risks of smokeless tobacco. I should also mention two other biggies: addiction and heart disease, though those are topics for another day.

At The Reno Dentist, we perform oral cancer screenings and mouth lesions examinations. To schedule an appointment, call 775-323-0700.

If want to quit using smokeless tobacco products, we recommend that you consult Dr. Sykes at The Reno Dentist, your primary care doctor, or your area pharmacist.

Dental Sealants – Another Tool For Cavity Prevention In Sparks NV

Family Dentistry Sparks NV

General dentistry patients in the Sparks NV area know that regular brushing and flossing are essential for optimal oral health. However, the bristles of your toothbrush can’t reach into every small groove and depression in your teeth, especially the really bumpy back teeth. That’s where sealants can be invaluable.

Dental sealants are a plastic material that is applied by your Sparks NV dentist. This material is a resin that bonds to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, mainly in the pits and fissures. The plastic acts as a shield against acids and plaque so that the tooth enamel is protected.

Many Sparks NV residents might think that sealants are only for children and teenagers, but they can actually be beneficial for adults as well. If you are wondering if sealants are right for you, speak with your Sparks NV family dentist. This simple dental procedure can dramatically improve your oral health by protecting the surfaces that are particularly vulnerable to decay.

Many Sparks NV dental insurance providers include dental sealants as a covered benefit, so check with your provider if you are considering them. If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about financing options. Because they can prevent cavities, dental sealants can save you money in the long run.

I’m Dr. Shane Sykes, a general and cosmetic dentist and I want to thank you for visiting my dental blog. At our office we serve the Sparks area by offering:

  • cosmetic dentistry
  • dental implants
  • general dentistry
  • wisdom teeth extraction
  • root canals

If you have any questions about these or other cosmetic dental procedures or would like to schedule an appointment, call us today at 775-323-0700.  Our knowledgeable staff would be happy to assist you.

Why You Need a Genuine Cosmetic Dentist

Cosmetic Dentist Reno A cosmetic surgeon has specialized schooling in addition to the training a general surgeon completes. Likewise, a true cosmetic dentist has completed rigorous courses in addition to dental school. Of course, many Reno general dentistry practices offer cosmetic dentistry treatment.

Teeth whitening, crowns, porcelain veneers, and dental bonding are some of the most common procedures in the Reno area.

In many cases, Reno general dentists achieve excellent results. However, there is a difference between adequate results and incredible results. Reno cosmetic dentists have the skills and experience to create absolutely beautiful smiles.

You have probably seen attractive front teeth crowns performed by a general dentist. They are often perfectly shaped, correctly aligned and pleasingly white. But have you ever seen front teeth dental crowns done by a true artist? The color, translucency, and texture take the crowns to the ultimate level of breathtaking beauty.

I am Dr. Shane Sykes of The Reno Dentist in Reno. I would love to tell you the specifics about my experience and specific training in the specialty of cosmetic dentistry. I can show you photos of mediocre cosmetic procedures performed by competent general dentists and you can compare them with photos of some of my actual Reno cosmetic dentistry patients.

For a cosmetic dentistry consultation, call 775-323-0700 today.
