Is Malocclusion Causing Your Headache?

End Migraine Headaches In Reno Are you a Reno area adult who suffers with chronic headaches? Have you tried Imitrex, diet adjustments, and chiropractic treatment? Perhaps the cause is not stress-induced tension, spine alignment or eyestrain. Maybe the culprit is right under your nose.

Bite misalignment or malocclusion is a common Reno problem that often goes undetected. Nature intended the front teeth to fit slightly forward from the lower teeth. With a perfect bite, the molars fit together like precision gears.

Malocclusion can cause headaches, tooth loosening, tooth fracture, and in extreme cases, difficulty chewing, speaking or breathing.

Clear braces are an effective solution for most bite problems. Braces not only move teeth, they can also correct the position and function of the joints, muscles and bones in the jaw. In cases of extreme malocclusion or TMD, jaw surgery may be necessary.

Not all Reno and Sparks NV area family dentists treat bite problems. At The Reno Dentist we treat all types of malocclusion including overbite, underbite and crossbite. For an affordable Reno general dentistry consultation, call us at 775-323-0700.

Reno TMJ Treatment

TMJ Treatment Reno Are you one of the many Reno TMJ sufferers? If you are affected by Temporomandibular joint or TMJ disorder, you know how the pain and discomfort can impact your life. The Reno Dentist TMJ treatment in the Sparks area has helped countless grateful Reno TMJ patients manage their TMJ disorder.

The Temporomandibular or jaw joint connects the lower jaw bone to the skull. Symptoms of TMJ disorder include jaw and facial pain, headaches, earaches, neck pain and chewing difficulty. TMJ disease is often associated with jaw clicking, locking or clenching, and can cause tooth damage and bone loss.

Many Reno area TMJ patients first sought a possible TMJ diagnosis after trying unsuccessfully to relieve their frequent headaches. Since opening The Reno Dentist in 2011, we have discovered that many people do not realize they have TMJ disorder because it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what is causing the pain. A TMJ and TMD specialist can properly diagnose your specific TMJ issues and recommend an effective course of action.

Because a comprehensive treatment plan is most successful, we work hand-in-hand with a network of TMJ specialists including ENT doctors, neurologists and physical therapists. There are many facets to this often misunderstood disorder. If you are suffering from jaw pain, we recommend a consultation with Dr. Shane Sykes at The Reno Dentist in Reno.

Reno Children’s Dental Care and Thumb Sucking

Open Bite For years, Reno parents have been warned that thumb-sucking can cause future cosmetic dental problems for their thumb-loving toddlers. One of these problems is a type of malocclusion called an open bite.

An open bite occurs when the front teeth in the lower and upper jaw have been moved forward; often to the extent that they do not meet when the mouth is closed. In most cases, an open bite has been caused by thumb sucking, but pacifiers and tongue thrusting can also move teeth out of alignment.

Tongue thrusting refers to an abnormal swallowing action in which the tongue is pushed forward during swallowing. Normally, the tongue is on the roof of the mouth and the teeth closed completely when swallowing. A tongue-thrusting habit can develop due to factors other than thumb sucking, though this is a common cause. Allergies, large tonsils, tongue size, jaw angle, muscular problems, frequent sore throats; anything that makes swallowing difficult, can result in a tongue-thrusting habit.

At The Reno Dentist in Reno, we diagnose bite problems in young family dentistry clients such as underbites, overbites, crossbites and open bites. If dental treatment is started early in a child’s life, many bite issues and their associated problems (such as TMD) can be prevented.
