Dental Sealant Q & A

dental sealants Reno

Q. What are dental sealants?
A. Dental sealants are permanent plastic barriers applied to the biting surfaces of teeth. They prevent cavities by filling in the grooves and fissures where food particles are particularly difficult to remove. Most Sparks pediatric dentists and family dentists offer sealants to their patients.

A. Do sealants significantly reduce tooth decay?
Q. Yes. Studies show that dental sealants can cut down the risk of decay by 70%!

Q. How are dental sealants applied to the teeth?
A. Your dentist applies the sealant resin as a liquid which quickly hardens and adheres tightly to the pits and grooves. The procedure is speedy, easy and painless.

Q. Which teeth can benefit the most from sealants?
A. Sealants are most commonly applied to the first and second molars because they are at the highest risk for decay.

Q. When should sealants be applied?
A. The best time is early – while the teeth are cavity-free. Your dentist will advise you.

Q. Are sealants just for kids?
A. Not necessarily. Talk to your Reno dentist about whether sealants could benefit you.

Q. Is brushing and flossing still necessary for the teeth with sealants?
A. Yes. Vigilant oral hygiene is still vital to keep teeth and gums healthy. Even the teeth with sealants are at risk for decay along the gumline.

Oral Rinses: An Extra Measure of Tooth Protection for Kids

Oral Rinses: An Extra Measure Of Tooth Protection For Carson City Kids

Hello, I’m Shane Sykes of The Reno Dentist. Carson City parents usually know the basics on children’s oral health: limit sugar, make sure they brush and floss regularly, take them to the dentist for twice-yearly exams and cleanings, discourage between-meal snacking, see that they get enough calcium and Vitamin D, etc. Many Nevada parents also give their kids fluoride supplements if their municipal water supply has an inadequate level of fluoride.

Is there anything else a concerned Carson City parent can do to promote children’s oral health? Yes! Have children use an oral rinse that contains fluoride.

Fluoride supplements help strengthen teeth that are still forming, but fluoride rinses help teeth that have already come in. A fluoride rinse is an added measure of protection.

I recommend Nevada children use an oral rinse after they brush and floss. They should swish it around in their mouth for thirty seconds or so, and then spit it out. (Make sure your child doesn’t swallow it!) This should be the last substance in their mouth before they go to bed. The fluoride will remain on the teeth and help prevent new cavities from forming. It can also help stop any demineralization that has already begun by accumulating in the tiny fissures and fortifying the enamel.

At The Reno Dentist, we focus on preventative dentistry for Sparks families. We believe that today’s Nevada children can enjoy healthy teeth for life.

In addition to all general dentistry procedures, we also offer complete smile makeovers. If you are interested in transforming your entire smile with precision cosmetic dentistry, call us at 775-322-5016 to schedule an appointment.

The Reno Dentist Guide To Dry Mouth

The The Reno Dentist Guide To Dry Mouth

Many folks in our Reno community experience dry mouth occasionally. Some develop dry mouth in social situations or when they are under a lot of stress. Sporadic or infrequent dry mouth is usually not a problem. Constant dry mouth, or xerostomia, is not only irritating, it can lead to severe health problems.

Reno people should not take their saliva for granted. Your saliva plays a very important role in maintaining your health. One of its roles is to help digest your food. The moment food enters your mouth, saliva starts breaking it down so your body can metabolize it. If you don’t produce enough saliva to perform this task, your body may not be getting important nutrients needed to stay healthy.

Saliva also functions as a disinfectant by cleansing the mouth of leftover food, bacteria, and fungi.
This helps prevent tooth decay and infections. Many Reno residents don’t realize that many of the foods we eat are very acidic and our saliva helps counteract those acids in our mouths.

I am Shane Sykes, and my staff and I at The Reno Dentist treat xerostomia regularly for our Reno, Spanish Springs, and Sparks patients. I recommend cutting back on caffeine in such drinks as cola, coffee, and tea. Not only do these beverages stain and discolor your teeth, but the caffeine can also contribute to dry mouth. I also recommend drinking water throughout the day to make sure you are adequately hydrated.

Tobacco and alcohol can also contribute to dry mouth. Consult your Sparks physician if you are taking medication that is causing your dry mouth.

Dry mouth is not a natural part of aging, so call The Reno Dentist today and schedule an appointment if your dry mouth is getting worse as you grow older.
