Top 5 Dos And Don’ts

Spanish Springs General Dentistry Office Ready To Serve

Welcome to our blog and thanks for stopping by. The Reno Dentist wants to offer you some easy hints when caring for your teeth.

We can make you look and feel great

1.Do… remember you are just wiping the plaque away before it turns to tartar. A gentle toothbrushing at the correct angle can gently wipe the bacteria away. Once plaque has settled into tartar, no amount of scrubbing at home can responsibly remove it.
Don’t… scrub your teeth and gums until your gums recede and expose parts of your tooth you don’t want exposed.

2.Do… remember your gums need to be cared for. Proper brushing and regular flossing can keep your gums healthy and strong.
Don’t… wait to see your a dental professional about sore or bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity or mouth sores.

3.Do… create a routine for brushing and flossing that leaves ample time to spend a full two minutes gently cleaning all the nooks and crannies of your delicate mouth.
Don’t… forget to have a new floss package ready to use when your current one runs out. Waiting days to get to the store for more can disrupt a good routine.

4.Do… make regular dental visits for cleaning and examination by a professional. Call The Reno Dentist to set up your initial consultation today. 775-323-0700 We’ve got the phones ready! Cancer screenings, cavity checks and removal of tartar from the teeth are vital to maintaining a healthy mouth.
Don’t… worry if you don’t have the healthiest of mouths. The Reno Dentist can help you get back on track. Whether you’re looking for cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, or general dentistry, we can restore what has been lost or counsel with you on the best options. If wisdom teeth extraction or root canals is what it takes, then we are equipped and ready to serve the Spanish Springs, Virginia City, Carson City communities.

5.Do… enjoy your mouth and all the wonders it is capable of.
Don’t… put off coming in to find out about the possibility and cost of cosmetic dentistry, implants, veneers, braces, etc.

Preventative Maintenance For Your Irreplaceable Smile In Reno

General Dentistry Preventative Maintenance For Your Smile In Reno

Hi, I’m Shane Sykes of The Reno Dentist. If you are one of my existing patients, welcome back. If this is your first visit, I appreciate you stopping by.

My knowledgeable team and I love taking care of our Reno, Spanish Springs, Virginia City, and Carson City patients.

Today’s article is for Sparks area people who are overdue for a cleaning and exam.

During dental deep cleanings, our hygienists thoroughly remove the plaque and tartar above and below the gumline. By scaling and planing, they remove areas where bacteria can easily multiply. If you are due for a cleaning, call us today at 775-323-0700
to schedule.

After your teeth have been cleaned, I perform a thorough examination. I check for overall tooth and gum health, the presence of cavities, gum pocket depth, bite issues, and signs of oral cancer.

Some Reno people mistakenly believe that they can skip general dentistry visits if they don’t notice anything out of the ordinary. This attitude is risky. Many dental problems advance silently. When the patient experiences pain, much damage has been done. Gum disease, especially, often progresses unnoticed.

If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about dental financing options. It costs far less to prevent problems than to treat them after they have become severe.

If you perform regular auto maintenance, you understand the wisdom of prevention. Don’t you value your smile far more than your car? Call The Reno Dentist today to schedule preventative maintenance for your irreplaceable smile.

4 Super Tips For Strong Enamel In Spanish Springs

Spanish Springs General Dentistry and Dental Health

Did you know that enamel is the hardest substance in the body? It’s true! This substance, found on the outer surface of your teeth, truly should last a lifetime. But just because it’s super strong doesn’t mean you don’t have to work to take care of it.

Here are some helpful tips for keeping enamel healthy.

1. Pick the right foods for enamel health. It’s no secret that soft drinks hurt your teeth, and don’t think that diet sodas are harmless – the artificial sweeteners can also erode enamel over time. There are also other culinary culprits that can do a lot of harm. Sticky, chewy candies should be avoided. Chewing ice is a no-no. And don’t use your teeth as tools. Take a minute to grab some scissors before you rip open that package with your teeth.

On the flip side, foods with calcium can neutralize acid in your mouth as protect your teeth. So, enjoy your dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurt!

2. Avoid vigorous brushing and use a soft brush. Also, it’s best to brush about an hour after eating, because foods, especially acidic ones, can soften the enamel, thus making it more prone to damage from brushing. If your teeth are discolored or yellowish, you may feel you need to brush harder. Instead, discuss teeth whitening with your dentist.

3. Keep stomach acids in check. If you have a problem with severe heartburn, the stomach acid could be traveling up your esophagus and into your mouth. This acid can erode enamel, so talk to your Spanish Springs, Reno, or Carson City doctor about treatment.

4. Talk to your dentist about dry mouth and tooth grinding. Lack of saliva is a major problem for tooth enamel, and it’s no surprise that teeth grinding can also wear it down. Make sure your Sparks area dentist is aware if you experience either of these issues.

I also love helping my patients get the dazzling smile they want with various cosmetic dentistry procedures such as dental bonding, veneers, invisible braces, tooth colored fillings, and dental implants.

Keeping Dental Patients Comfortable in Reno

Keeping Cosmetic Dental Patients Comfortable in Reno

Pain isn’t fun. Your Reno dentist knows this, and that is why the dental team at The Reno Dentist have made patient comfort a top priority. In conjunction with creating a relaxing environment, your dentist has various medications that can reduce and even eliminate pain associated with different dental procedures to give you a more enjoyable experience.

Some of the most common pain-relieving medications used in Sparks dentist offices and around the country are topical anesthetics. These are swabbed directly onto mouth tissue so they only numb the very surface layers. Topical anesthetics can reduce the pain of mouth sores, or they can be applied to prepare the mouth for an injection.

Local anesthetics are injected into mouth tissue (usually the gums) to block the nerve sensations to specific areas of the mouth. Spanish Springs, Virginia City, and Carson City dentists numb the mouth in this way before filling cavities, treating gum disease, or before certain cosmetic dentistry procedures.

It is very common for your dentist to recommend an over the counter analgesic to relieve pain after a dental visit. These medications include aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen.

Because your Reno cosmetic dentist will most likely use a pain reliever during the dental visit or prescribe something for you to take after the treatment, make sure you jot down a complete list of medications you are taking, including herbal supplements, before each appointment.

I’m Dr. Shane Sykes and I want Sparks residents to be informed about their dental care, especially as it pertains to pain relief during dental treatment. If you are in the Reno area and are looking for quality dental care, please contact my office today at (775) 525-5692. Our knowledgeable staff would be happy to talk to you about cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, wisdom teeth extraction, and the other services we offer.

3 Ways To Keep Your Mouth Happy, Reno!

Family Dentistry Reno

Hi. I’m Dr. Shane Sykes, a general and cosmetic dentist here in Reno. It is my goal to help my patients have optimum oral health, and today I would like to talk about something else associated with our mouths that doesn’t get as much attention as cavities or cosmetic dentistry: it’s our sense of taste.

A happy mouth is not only a healthy mouth, but also a mouth that can enjoy the flavors of all types of foods. And it turns out that many of the habits that will keep your taste buds sensitive are those that will also be good for your teeth and gums. So here are a few tips to help you better enjoy the flavor of your food.

1) Treat dry mouth. Dry mouth can create a loss of taste sensitivity, so it should be treated quickly by your Sparks NV area family dentist. Plus, optimal levels of saliva are important to avoid cavities and keep gums healthy.

2) Avoid processed foods with fake flavors and too much sugar and salt. They will quickly desensitized you to more subtle, healthy flavors.

3) Don’t smoke! Cigarettes are responsible for so many horrible health issues, but many people don’t realize that their sense of taste is dulled while they smoke and the olfactory nerves can even be damaged permanently.

Thank you so much for visiting the Reno dentist blog. Along with dental health and a keen sense of taste, I want my patients to have the beautiful smile they have always desired. So, if you have any questions regarding cosmetic dentistry such as smile makeovers, dental implants or teeth whitening, please contact us. We are located at 855 W Seventh St Ste 200 and you can reach us for an appointment at 775-323-0700.

Energy Drink Warning For Sparks NV

General Dentistry Info For Sparks NV Residents About Energy Drinks Hello. I’m Dr. Shane Sykes.

Welcome to my Sparks NV dental blog. Today’s topic is energy drinks and the damage they can cause to your teeth. I am seeing more and more Reno area teens and adults with tooth enamel erosion caused by frequent consumption of sport drinks.

Most of these general dentistry patients take good care of their teeth, brush and flush, and come into The Reno Dentist for a twice-yearly exam and deep cleaning. But guess what? If you drink energy drinks regularly, your enamel can erode even if you practice immaculate oral hygiene.

Energy drinks like Red Bull, Rock Star, and Monster are a cocktail of powerful acids and other enamel-eroding substances. Most of them contain citric acid, fruit juices, loads of sugar, and a potent chemical that gives them their bright fluorescent color.

Perhaps, like myself, you have often noticed young people walking out of Sparks NV convenience stores swigging 32-ounce energy drinks. I am concerned that Reno area teens do not understand the serious dental consequences of frequent acid baths.

The following is from ABC Sports:

“Sports drinks are increasingly damaging the teeth of professional and recreational athletes, one of Australia’s top sports dentists has warned. Dr. Brett Dorney says he has witnessed a huge increase in dental erosion since the Sidney Olympics, when he was the event’s deputy director of dental services.”

Here is an excerpt from a recent CNN Story:

“Researchers at the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry found the energy drinks and sports drinks eroded the enamel more than soda and fruit juices.”

I need to add the caveat that soda and fruit juices also contain acids that can damage teeth.

If your teeth have enamel erosion, whatever the cause, we can restore your smile with advanced cosmetic dentistry. Crowns, porcelain veneers, inlays and onlays can correct both structural and cosmetic problems.

Our phone number is 775-323-0700. If you are interested in re-designing your smile, come in for an exam and consultation. With cutting-edge cosmetic dentistry, we can repair acid-damaged teeth and dramatically increase your face value.

Does My Reno Dentist Care About My Diet?

General Dentistry and Diet In Reno When people in the Reno area think of diet and oral health, they probably think about the damage sweet drinks can cause to teeth. While it’s true that these sugars cause increased acidity in the mouth and lead to tooth decay, soda and sugary-fruit drinks are only part of the issue.

The typical American diet tends to be high in calories and low in nutrition, even here in Reno and Sparks NV.

If your body is lacking in certain nutrients, the tissues in the mouth may have trouble resisting infection. These infections can lead to gum disease.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has recently unveiled the MyPlate graphic to illustrate a healthy diet. Half of our meals should be composed of fruits and vegetables and the rest should be equally divided between lean protein, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.

While this is an excellent resource, dietary needs change throughout life, so it’s a good idea to call us at 775-323-0700 and schedule a check-up with Reno dentist Dr. Shane Sykes to see if your diet is affecting your teeth.

When you eat a balanced diet and feel your best, you’ll want to look your best, so be sure to ask our knowledgeable staff about the latest cosmetic dentistry procedures such as complete smile makeovers and same day restorations.

At The Reno Dentist, our menu of services includes crowns, veneers, inlays, onlays, dental implants, tooth colored fillings, sealants, teeth whitening, and clear braces.

Stay Out Of The Sparks Dental Danger Zone

General Dentistry In The Sparks NV Area

You would never consider running a red light on a busy Reno street or crossing over a lane of orange construction cones on the freeway, but you might be doing some everyday things that are a real danger to your oral health.

I’m Dr. Shane Sykes, a cosmetic and family dentist serving the Sparks NV area, and I want to share with you some common habits that could be detrimental to the health of your teeth.

Crunching ice between your teeth might be refreshing on a nice day in Reno, but the soft tissue inside your teeth won’t appreciate it. Once this tissue gets irritated, you’re more likely to get toothaches and have increased sensitivity to hot or cold foods.

Participating in your favorite sport without proper mouth protection is a risk that no one in Sparks NV should take. If there is a chance that a mouth injury could occur (and there is with most sports) then get to the nearest sporting goods store and purchase an inexpensive mouth guard or, better yet, ask me about a custom mouthguard.

Using your teeth to open anything is a bad idea. Every time your teeth come in contact with foreign objects there is potential for chipping and cracking.

Now that you know how to avoid these risks, what can you do if you’ve already damaged your teeth from these activities or similar ones? Make an appointment with our knowledgeable staff and we’ll see how we can help.

If you’ve had chipping or cracking problems, there are a variety of cosmetic dentistry procedures that might help you. If you have overly-sensitive teeth, I may be able to prescribe a prescription toothpaste to relieve the pain.

We can also answer any questions you have about veneers, gum contouring, or teeth whitening. We hope to hear from you soon, but in the meantime, keep those pearly whites safe and sound.
