Frequently Asked Questions About Diagnosing The Causes
How do dentists begin the TMJ diagnostic process?
Dentists usually begin by reviewing your medical and dental history and discussing your symptoms. They may ask about headaches, jaw discomfort, chewing difficulties, or jaw clicking sounds.
How do dentists determine whether headaches are related to TMJ?
Dentists evaluate jaw movement, muscle tenderness, and bite alignment to determine whether TMJ dysfunction may contribute to headaches or migraines.
How long does TMJ diagnosis usually take?
The evaluation may occur during one or more dental visits. Dentists may need additional imaging or specialist consultations to fully understand the cause of the symptoms.
Do dentists evaluate jaw muscles during TMJ diagnosis?
Yes. Dentists often check the jaw muscles for tenderness, stiffness, or inflammation to determine whether muscle tension contributes to TMJ pain.
What happens after the dentist identifies the cause of TMJ symptoms?
Once the dentist identifies the cause, they can recommend targeted treatments such as oral appliances, bite adjustments, stress management techniques, or other therapies designed to reduce strain on the jaw joint.
Do dentists evaluate facial muscles when diagnosing TMJ disorders?
Yes. Dentists often examine the facial and jaw muscles to identify tension, inflammation, or tenderness that may contribute to TMJ discomfort.
