Dentures (also known as false teeth) are prosthetic devices constructed to replace missing teeth and are supported by surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Conventional dentures are removable; however there are many different denture designs, some of which rely on bonding or clasping onto teeth or dental implants.
Implant Denture Options
You may have experienced or heard of many negative side effects denture wearers encounter such as slipping, soreness, clicking, speech impediment and bone loss. At The Reno Dentist, these can be eliminated through the use of implant-supported dentures. Dental implants can be placed in the jaw bone to act as anchors for the complete or partial dentures. With this secure support, implant-supported dentures can look and function just like natural teeth!
Types of Dentures
The types of dentures available for you can vary, depending on whether they are used to replace missing teeth on the mandibular arch or the maxillary arch. The options for dentures include:
Removable Partial Dentures
Are for patients who are missing some of their teeth on a particular arch.
Fixed Partial Dentures
Also known as “crown and bridge”, are made from dental crowns that are fitted on the remaining teeth to act as abutments made from materials to resemble the missing teeth. Fixed partial dentures or dental bridges are more expensive than removable appliances, but are more stable.
Complete Dentures or Full Dentures
Are worn by patients who are missing all of the teeth in a single arch (i.e. the maxillary (upper) or mandibular (lower) arch).
How Dentures Are Made
Modern dentures are most often fabricated in a commercial dental laboratory using a combination of a tissue shaded powder acrylic for the tissue shaded aspect, and commercially produced acrylic teeth available in hundreds of shapes and tooth colors.
The Denture Process
The process of fabricating a denture usually begins with a dental impression of the maxilla or mandible. This impression is used to create a stone model that represents the arch. Processing a denture is usually performed in a lost-wax process, after a curing period, the stone investment is removed, the acrylic is polished, and the denture is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dentures and Partials
What are dentures?
Dentures are removable dental appliances that replace missing teeth and surrounding gum tissue. They help restore function, appearance, and proper bite alignment. (mayoclinic.org)
What are partial dentures?
Partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth while keeping the remaining natural teeth in place. They usually attach to the existing teeth using metal clasps or precision attachments.
Can dentures improve chewing and speaking?
Yes. Well-fitted dentures restore the ability to chew more efficiently and can improve speech clarity, especially when teeth are missing.
Are dentures comfortable to wear?
New dentures may feel unusual or slightly uncomfortable at first. Most patients adjust within a few weeks, especially after minor adjustments by the dentist.
How do I care for my dentures?
Dentures require daily cleaning with a soft toothbrush or denture cleaner. Patients should also rinse them after eating and soak them overnight in a denture solution to maintain hygiene and prevent warping.
Can I eat normally with dentures?
Yes. Patients can eat most foods once they adapt to wearing dentures. Cutting food into smaller pieces initially may help with comfort and chewing efficiency.
